Carolyn Doscher Orvis, 85, of Carson City, NV died Memorial Day, May 25, 2020 at her residence in Carson City after a lengthy illness.   Graveside Services will be held in the West Union Cemetery on Saturday, May 22, 2021 at 11:00 a.m.

Carolyn was born May 09, 1935 in West Union, Iowa the daughter of Herman and Pauline (Blunt) Doscher.  Carolyn attended West Union High School and graduated in 1953.  After High School she continued her studies at the University of Iowa and graduated in 1957 with a degree in Dental Hygiene as a Certified Dental Hygienist. 

She was active in many social activities including being the First Chair of the Bagpiper group, The Scottish Highlanders of the University of Iowa.  Throughout her life she was proficient in music also playing the clarinet, piano and singing.  She was an active member of the United Methodist Church her entire life.

Wenceslaus Dostal

 

    Wenceslaus Anthony Dostal, age 95, of Decorah, IA died on Thursday, April 1, 2021 at the Barthell O.E.S Home in Decorah, IA.

     Wenceslaus was born on June 15, 1925 on a farm near Little Turkey, Iowa the son of Stanley and Lucy (Pechota) Dostal.  He attended Rudolphinum High School in Protivin, Iowa.  He joined the Navy in July of 1942 rising from Seaman to Chief Petty Officer.  He retired from military service in December of 1965.  He worked for Bell Helicopter Company in Fort Worth, Texas as a technical representative.  Later he worked for Garrett Air Research in Phoenix, Arizona, EDO Corporation on Long Island, New York and ended his employment with Dresser Clark Industries in Houston, Texas, retiring in 1990.

Danny Franklin Nielsen, 60, of Elkader, died Monday, April 19, 2021, at his home after a long courageous battle with cancer. He was born May 25, 1960, in Rockford, IL, to Harry and Beverly (Brower) Nielsen.

Danny attended Central Community High School until entering the army as a jeep and tank mechanic. He served in the army from 1977-1979 where he spent most of his time stationed in Germany. 

After being honorably discharged from the service, Danny returned to Elkader and worked as a machinist for his father at Elkader Wire and Display.

He was united in marriage to Judy (Powers) Stoffel on August 7, 1982, at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Elkader. 

He worked at Reilly Construction as a Heavy Equipment Operator for over 30 years.

Jeannette Lois (Staton) Strong was born May 6, 1931 in Lexington, KY and passed away April 2, 2021 in Loveland, CO.  Jeannette was the daughter of Edward B. and Hazel Poe Staton. She graduated from Lafayette High School in Lexington, class of 1949. She attended the University of Kentucky for one year. Following, she was employed by the FBI in Washington D.C. from 1951 to 1955. 

Jeannette married Earle L. Strong on September 14, 1952 in Lexington, KY. The two of them were married for 68 wonderful years. They were the parents of two daughters, Pamela Sue and Kathryn Lynn and 4 grandchildren.

Gwen (Hammersland) McDonald

 

Gwen Lee (Hammersland) McDonald, 63, passed away on April 15, 2021, in Ketchikan, Alaska.

She was born Gwen Lee Hammersland on June 28, 1957 at Smith Memorial Hospital in Decorah, Iowa.

Gwen attended South Winneshiek Community School, graduating in 1975 and then attended Iowa State University in Ames, Iowa through 1977. She transferred to the University of Iowa in Iowa City, Iowa, and graduated in 1980 with a Bachelor of Arts in Elementary Education.

She taught special needs preschool in Clinton, Iowa, from 1980 to 1982, and in New Ulm, Minnesota from 1982 to 1984. In 1984, Gwen graduated with a Master of Arts from Mankato State University in Mankato, Minnesota and headed to Alaska.

Verna Katherine Massman, 87, of Lansing, Iowa died Monday, April 19, 2021 at Mayo Clinic Hospital, Rochester, Minnesota. She was born August 29, 1933 to Joseph J. and Anna J. (Blong) Schmitt in St. Lucas, Iowa.

On January 21, 1952, Verna was united in marriage with Albin Massman at St. Luke Catholic Church in St. Lucas, Iowa. Fourteen children were born to this union. Shortly after their marriage, Albin left to serve in the Army during the Korean War. After his return, they started farming and spent the next forty-six years building their dairy farming operation together.

Charles {Chuck) Jacobsen, 96, of West Union, Iowa, died Friday, April 9, 2021, at Gundersen Palmer Hospital in West Union, Iowa. Chuck was born at the home farm just outside of West Union, Iowa, on February 11, 1925, to James and Hazel (Musser) Jacobsen. He graduated from West Union High School in 1942 with the honor of being salutatorian of his class. After graduation he farmed with his father on the family farm. He proudly served his country in the United States Army from December 1950 to December 1952.

Janice Yvonne Smith, 85 of West Union, Iowa passed away on Saturday April 10, 2021. Janice was born on September 1, 1935 to Elmer and Marie (Schultz) Meyer. Janice grew up in the rural Millville area and graduated from the Guttenberg High School. 

Janice is the proud mother of 9 children. In her early years Janice was a farm wife, busy milking cows and raising children. In 1970 Janice received her nursed aide training through Northeast Area One School in Calmar and began a 10-year career at the Strawberry Point Lutheran Home. Janice also worked at North Star and Atwood in West Union until retiring due to health complications.

Andy Pavlovec age 36 of North Liberty, IA, formerly of St. Lucas, IA, died Thursday, April 8, 2021, of injuries he received after being struck by a car doing the activity he loved most – riding his bike.

A Mass of Christian Burial was held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, April 17, 2021, at St. Luke's Catholic Church, St. Lucas, with his Godfather, Rev. Jim Goerend celebrating the Mass. Interment will be in the church cemetery.

  Friends greeted the family from 4 - 7 p.m. Friday, April 16, 2021, at the church. Visitation continued an hour prior to the Mass at the church on Saturday.
