Verna Massman

Verna Massman

 

Verna Katherine Massman, 87, of Lansing, Iowa died Monday, April 19, 2021 at Mayo Clinic Hospital, Rochester, Minnesota. She was born August 29, 1933 to Joseph J. and Anna J. (Blong) Schmitt in St. Lucas, Iowa.

On January 21, 1952, Verna was united in marriage with Albin Massman at St. Luke Catholic Church in St. Lucas, Iowa. Fourteen children were born to this union. Shortly after their marriage, Albin left to serve in the Army during the Korean War. After his return, they started farming and spent the next forty-six years building their dairy farming operation together.

Charles {Chuck) Jacobsen, 96, of West Union, Iowa, died Friday, April 9, 2021, at Gundersen Palmer Hospital in West Union, Iowa. Chuck was born at the home farm just outside of West Union, Iowa, on February 11, 1925, to James and Hazel (Musser) Jacobsen. He graduated from West Union High School in 1942 with the honor of being salutatorian of his class. After graduation he farmed with his father on the family farm. He proudly served his country in the United States Army from December 1950 to December 1952.

Janice Yvonne Smith, 85 of West Union, Iowa passed away on Saturday April 10, 2021. Janice was born on September 1, 1935 to Elmer and Marie (Schultz) Meyer. Janice grew up in the rural Millville area and graduated from the Guttenberg High School. 

Janice is the proud mother of 9 children. In her early years Janice was a farm wife, busy milking cows and raising children. In 1970 Janice received her nursed aide training through Northeast Area One School in Calmar and began a 10-year career at the Strawberry Point Lutheran Home. Janice also worked at North Star and Atwood in West Union until retiring due to health complications.

Andy Pavlovec age 36 of North Liberty, IA, formerly of St. Lucas, IA, died Thursday, April 8, 2021, of injuries he received after being struck by a car doing the activity he loved most – riding his bike.

A Mass of Christian Burial was held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, April 17, 2021, at St. Luke's Catholic Church, St. Lucas, with his Godfather, Rev. Jim Goerend celebrating the Mass. Interment will be in the church cemetery.

  Friends greeted the family from 4 - 7 p.m. Friday, April 16, 2021, at the church. Visitation continued an hour prior to the Mass at the church on Saturday.

Cletus Martin Bouska, of Waucoma, passed away on Wednesday, April 14, 2021, on the family farm surrounded by his loving family. A visitation will be on April 25, 2021 from 2-6 p.m. at the Waucoma Event Center in Waucoma, Iowa. The funeral service will be held on Monday, April 26, 2021, at 10:30 a.m. at Our Lady of Mount Carmel in Lawler, Iowa.

One in a million, God-fearing, fun-loving Cletus Martin Bouska was born on March 23, 1940, on the same family farm where he passed. He was the eleventh and youngest child of Julius “Mike” Bouska and Mayme (Schlichte) Bouska. Loved and cherished from the moment of his birth, Cletus’s quick wit and love for a good prank endeared him to all he met. He received his education at Alpha School, graduating in 1957, the last class to graduate from Alpha.

Mary Eileen Buenzow, age 66 of Waseca died on Saturday, April 17, 2021 at her home following a nine year courageous fight with cancer.

  Born on April 7, 1955 in Dubuque, Iowa, she was the daughter of Merlin and Marjorie (Quinn) Dunt.   She attended Holy Name Catholic School in West Union before graduating from North High School in 1973.    Mary went on to attend Humboldt Airline School in Minneapolis and began working for Northwest Orient Airlines.   On June 5, 1976, Mary was united in marriage to Steven Buenzow.  They moved to Waseca where they were blessed with 24 years of marriage and three children before their divorce in 1998.

Over the years, Mary was employed at the Waseca Clinic and did home daycare before she began her career at the City of Waseca in 1987. She took pride in her role as City Clerk. She loved her job and co-workers and had many great memories of those years.  She retired as City Clerk in 2018.

Dean L. Rueber, 78, of Westgate, Iowa died peacefully on Tuesday morning, April 13, 2021 at his lifelong home with his family by his side.

Funeral Service were held at  10:30 a.m. Saturday, April 17, 2021 at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Maynard, Iowa with Rev. Dennis Frank officiating.

Visitation was from 4 to 8 p.m. on Friday, April 16, 2021 at the Jamison-Schmitz Funeral Home in Maynard and for one hour before the service at the church on Saturday.

Interment was in the Murphy-Greenwood Cemetery, rural Westgate.

A Memorial Fund has been established.

Karen E. Olson, 58, of Des Moines, Iowa, passed away Sunday, April 4, 2021 at MercyOne Medical Center in Des Moines.  Memorial services for Karen will take place at a later time.

Karen was born March 21, 1963 in New Hampton, Iowa, to Herbert and Betty (DeSloover) Tillman.  She attained her Bachelor’s Degree and worked as an underwriter for a majority of her life.  Karen was united in marriage to Eric Olson. They had two daughters, Amy and Alicia.

Karen was a very good listener, always being there for her friends and family in times of need. She will be remembered for her twinkling blue eyes and mischievous side, laughing as she made jokes.

Karen will be missed my many. Including her husband, Eric Olson, daughters: Alicia and Amy Olson; grandchildren: sisters: Katherine Donath, Virginia (Robert) Witt, Marla (David) Pleggenkuhle and Bonnie Wessels and brother, David (Marcia) Tillman.

Roger C. Pagel, 71, of Sumner, died Saturday, April 10, 2021, at Maple Crest Manor in Fayette.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 P.M., Thursday, April 15, 2021, at Union United Methodist Church, rural Sumner with Rev. Julie Ahrens officiating. The funeral service will be livestreamed on Becker-Milnes & Rettig Facebook Page. Burial will follow at the Church Cemetery. Visitation will be held on Wednesday, April 14, from 4 to 7 P.M. at Becker-Milnes Funeral Home in Sumner and for one hour preceding services at the Church on Thursday.
