Cedar Falls – Sue Dutcher, 72, passed away at the Shell Rock Health Care Center, Shell Rock on  November 18, 2021.

Carole was born at the Gundersen Palmer Hospital, West Union on September 17th, 1949, the third child to Clifford Bailey Boehmler and Barbara Elizabeth (Niles) Boehmler.

Sue grew up on the family’s 160-acre farm in rural Hawkeye, Iowa. Sue enjoyed the cats and dogs, tolerated the pigs, and disliked the twice a day of milking 40+ cows.

Sue attended a one room school in Hawkeye through the 3rd grade, then attended the new elementary school in Hawkeye. She was bussed to high school in West Union. After graduating high school, she attended the State College of Iowa, Kansas State University, and then University of Northern Iowa, graduating with her BA in 2004.

Nell Regina Preuss, 89, of Castalia, Iowa died Tuesday, January 11, 2022 at Copper Creek in West Union, Iowa. Nell was born April 28, 1932 to Joseph and Theresa (Schaefers) Wille in Garnavillo, Iowa. She graduated from Garnavillo Catholic School in 1950 and went to work as a telephone operator.

On September 8, 1952, Nell was united in marriage with Harold Preuss in Postville, Iowa. Eleven children were born to this union. Nell loved farming with her husband and was a wonderful mother. She enjoyed reading and spending time with her grandchildren. Nell was a member of St. Bridget’s Catholic Church in Postville, Iowa.

Betty L. Benter, 88, of Oelwein, Iowa, died peacefully with her family by her side on Friday morning, January 14, 2022, at Grandview Healthcare Center, Oelwein.

Private Family Funeral Service will be held at Zion Lutheran Church, Oelwein.  

Public Visitation:   5:00 to 7:00 p.m. on Thursday, January 20, 2022 at the Jamison-Schmitz Funeral Home, Oelwein.

Interment:  Hawkeye Cemetery, Hawkeye, Iowa.

A Memorial Fund has been established.

Donald Alfred Gurnett, 81, of Iowa City, Iowa passed away on January 13, 2022 at The Bird House Hospice Home of Johnson County surrounded by family, after a short illness. A celebration of life will be held later due to Covid-19.

Joshua Jerome Moore, 39, of rural Strawberry Point, died Saturday, January 8, 2022, following injuries sustained in an auto accident. He was born January 11, 1982, in West Union, to Gene Moore and Julie Torkelson.

Joshua attended Valley Community Schools. He drove as a company driver for Crawford Transport. A few years later, he attended Iowa Lakes Community College, specializing in the wind energy program, and worked in that field for 10 years. He then became/owner/operator traveling to many areas of the U.S., first leasing on with Crawford Transport, and in the past year with Mihm Brothers.

He enjoyed spending time with family and friends. His nieces and nephews were the light of his life; he rarely missed a birthday party. Joshua was involved in many outdoor activities: deer hunting, fishing, canoeing and boating on the Mississippi, just to name a few.

Gary Gibbs, 62, of Independence (formerly of West Union) died January 8, 2022 of kidney cancer. 

He is survived by his wife of 36 years, Carol (Hoglan) and three sons. 

Celebration of Life will be Saturday, January 29th from 2-4 p.m. at the Rustic Chic Event Center in West Union. 

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to a charity of the donor’s choice.

Brett Hanson, age 51, of Waucoma, IA died Sunday, January 2, 2022, at Gundersen Lutheran Medical Center in LaCrosse, WI. 

Friends may greet the family from 3:00 - 7:00 p.m. on Thursday, January 6, 2022, at the Waucoma Event Center where there will be a 7:00 p.m. memorial service with Rev. Brett was born on September 25, 1970, to Robert and Norma Jean (Schatz)Hanson on an American Air Force base in Okinawa, Japan, and he was welcomed home by two brothers — Blaine and Bryce — and the three Hanson boys had a tight bond that lasted a lifetime.

Richard H. Meyer died Friday, January 7, 2022, in his armchair at home in West Union. He was 89.

Richard Henry Meyer was born April 29, 1932, in West Union. As a lifelong member of St. Peter Lutheran Church in Eldorado, he was baptized May 22, 1932, and confirmed April 14, 1946. He grew up on a family farm northeast of Eldorado. He attended country school through eighth grade at Dover No. 4 Willow Springs, and graduated from West Union High School in 1950. From 1953 to 1955, he served in the U.S. Army, traveling around the country to military sites in Kansas, Maryland, New Jersey, Washington, California and Nevada. As a member of the 573rd Ordnance Company, he witnessed the testing of atomic bombs at Camp Desert Rock northwest of Las Vegas. In later years, he was a cancer survivor, one of many who were “downwinders” from the atomic tests.

Robert Brandt, age 94, of Ossian IA, died on Sunday, December 26, 2021 at the Ossian Senior Hospice in Ossian, IA.  

The funeral service will be at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, January 6, 2022 at Zion Lutheran Church in Castalia, IA with Lay Minister Daryl Schultz presiding. 

Visitation will be from 9:30-10:30 a.m. prior to the service at the church. The Schluter-Balik Funeral Home is handling arrangements.

Robert Kenneth Brandt was born on March 14, 1927, in rural Castalia, Iowa, the son of Walter and Annetta (Huisinga) Brandt. He was baptized and confirmed at Zion Lutheran Church in Castalia. He attended Castalia area schools until graduating in 1945. Robert married Marlus Engelhardt on January 25, 1948 at Zion Lutheran Church in Castalia.
