Former W.U. resident dies

Kevin P. Reinert, 59, of Broussard, La., formerly of West Union, died Friday, Dec. 21, 2012, at his home.

A memorial service was held Dec. 31, 2012, at Nouvelle Church in Lafayette, La. Burial was in Mt. Calvary Cemetery in Salt Lake City, Utah.

Melancon Funeral Home of Carencro, La., handled the arrangements.

Kevin Paul Reinert was born June 2, 1953, in Battle Creek, Mich., to Dr. John E. and Mary Pat (Molumby) Reinert. 

He had been a resident of Acadiana, La., for over 30 years, spending most of those years as a painter.

Kevin’s father, Dr. John E. Reinert, and an uncle, Dr. M.J. Molumby, preceded him in death.

Survivors include his mother, Mary Pat Reinert of Salt Lake City, Utah, formerly of West Union; two brothers, Dennis Reinert of Temple, Texas, and Terrance “Terry” Reinert of Salt Lake City, Utah, and an aunt, Helen Molumby of West Union.

Funeral held for retired West Union chiropractor

Dr. Wilbur D. Bigler, 68, of West Union died Saturday, March 23, 2013, as a result of injuries sustained in an automobile accident near Solon.

  Funeral services were held Friday, March 29, at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Locust (rural Decorah).  The Rev. Nancy Solomonson officiated. 

Interment was in Locust Cemetery, Locust (rural Decorah). Military rites were conducted by Helof Holm VFW Chapter 1977 of Decorah. Casket bearers were Robert Bigler, Gordon Ellingson, Ricky Bigler, Rodney Houck, Dennis Bigler, James Wedo, and Hubert Ellingson.

Arrangements were handled by Schluter-Balik Funeral Home, Decorah.

Wilbur Dennis Bigler was born Aug. 18, 1944, to Elmer and Tilvina (Ellingson) Bigler in Decorah.    

He was baptized Sept. 10, 1944, at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Locust.

Marvel Wagner, 84, of West Union died Saturday, March 23, 2013, at St. Luke’s Hospital in Cedar Rapids.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, March 28, at West Union United Methodist Church.

Burial will follow in God’s Acre Cemetery in Clermont.

Friends may call from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. today (Wednesday) at Burnham-Wood & S.K. Rogers Funeral Home in West Union, which is handling the arrangements.

Bigler services

Funeral services for Dr. Wilbur Bigler, 67, of West Union will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, March 29, at St. John’s Lutheran Church, 1638 Big Canoe Rd., Decorah.

Visitation will be from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. Thursday, March 28, at Schluter-Balik Funeral Home in Decorah and after 10 a.m. at the church Friday.

Dr. Bigler died Saturday, March 23, 2013, of injuries sustained in a car accident near Solon.

Rita Downing, 69, of Wadena died Saturday, March 23, 2013, at Palmer Lutheran health Center, West Union.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, March 30, with visitation one hour before services at Leonard-Grau Funeral and Cremation Service of Elgin.

Burial will be in the Wadena Cemetery.

Arnold A. Bartz, 80, of Westgate died Saturday, March 23, 2013.

Services are pending with Jamison-Schmitz funeral Home, Maynard.

Paul L. Kaiser, 76

 

Funeral Mass celebrated at Holy Name

A Funeral Mass for Paul L. Kaiser, 76, of West Union was celebrated by the Rev. Dale Rausch on Saturday, March 16, at Holy Name Catholic Church in West Union. 

Burial was in Mount Calvary Cemetery, rural West Union.

Burnham-Wood & S.K. Rogers Funeral Home in West Union was in charge of arrangements.

Paul’s death occurred Monday, March 11, 2013.

Paul Lee Kaiser was born Aug. 1, 1936, to Helmer and Evelyn (Ferden) Kaiser in Rolfe. 

He graduated from Rolfe High School in 1954 and from Buena Vista College in 1958 with a degree in education. He graduated from the University of Nebraska-Omaha with a master’s degree in counseling in 1960 and earned his doctorate degree in education from Nova University in 1981. 

Paul spent several years in education at Treynor, where he was a teacher and football coach. He was a guidance counselor at North High School in West Union for five years.

Gerald D. Schroyer, 88

 

Services held Friday for W.U. native

Gerald D. Schroyer, 88, of Harrold, S.D., formerly of Arlington and West Union, died Saturday, March 9, 2013, at Avera St. Mary’s Hospital in Pierre, S.D. 

Funeral services were held Friday, March 15, at Wadena Community Church in Wadena with Pastor Rusty Phillips officiating. 

Burial was in the Wadena Cemetery.

Leonard-Grau Funeral Home of Elgin handled the local arrangements.

Gerald Donald “Jerry” Schroyer was born May 24, 1924, in West Union to Otto and Victoria (Stahl) Schroyer.  

He attended school in West Union.  

On Feb. 12, 1942, Jerry enlisted in the United States Army.  He was stationed in Mississippi for his basic training.  He served a tour in the European War Theater and received an honorable discharge on Dec. 22, 1945.

On July 23, 1948, he married Artalee Phillips at the Presbyterian Church in Wadena.  To this union, a son was born.

Paul Kaiser, 76, of West Union died Monday, March 11, 2013, at Manor Care Health Services - Utica Ridge in Davenport.

A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, March 16, at Holy Name Catholic Church in West Union. 

Burial will follow in Mount Calvary Cemetery, rural West Union.

Friends may call from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. Friday, March 15, at Burnham-Wood & S.K. Rogers Funeral Home in West Union. A rosary service will begin at 4 p.m.

Lois A. Schuchmann, 91

 

Services held for retired area teacher

A memorial service for Lois A. Schuchmann, 91, of West Union, formerly of Hawkeye, were held Monday, March 11, at Zion Lutheran Church in West Union.

Inurnment followed in the West Union Cemetery.

Becker-Milnes Funeral Home of Hawkeye and Iowa Cremation of Cedar Rapids assisted the family.

Lois Adeline (Kiel) Schuchmann was born Sept. 13, 1921, on a farm south of West Union in Fayette County.  She was the oldest child of Louis and Blanche (Stansberry) Kiel. 

Baptized in First United Methodist Church, Fayette, she became a communicant member of Zion Lutheran Church, West Union, on Oct. 12, 1945.

Lois graduated from Fayette High School in 1939 and earned her B.A. degree from Upper Iowa University in 1965.  She took graduate classes from Iowa Teachers College in Cedar Falls and correspondence classes from the University of Iowa, Iowa City.
